3. Anything Flammable or Hazardous

We don’t always think about the possible outcomes when storing items out of sight, so it could be easy to involuntarily store flammable things near heat sources in the basement, garage, or attic. Cleaning products, paint, garden chemicals, propane, and gas shouldn’t be stored in these areas, and especially shouldn’t be kept anywhere near the furnace or water heater.

Even if you’re storing paint away from a heat source, water damage can rust the can, and temperature changes can alter the paint’s color. If you accidentally scratch the paint from the wall or hit the wall and need touch-ups, you’ll want to have some extra paint somewhere stored to match the wall.

Do yourself a favor and store the paint somewhere indoors in a cool place, away from any gas sources.
