The 80s is already well known as a decade of excess but the use of a particular floral design took the word ‘excess’ to ‘excessive’ in short order. This printed multicoloured cotton fabric, known as Chintz, with a glazed finish saw an explosion of popularity in the 1980s but actually, it originated in Golconda (present day Hyderabad, India) way back in the 16th century.
So popular was this design, that it found its way not just onto upholstery but on drapes and tablecloths, to a point where entire rooms almost felt like they were just made of Chintz and we say enough is enough.
