This style of interior design started life in homes in the English countryside where furniture and furnishings are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear or where new items are deliberately distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique.
Its popularity in America hit its height towards the end of the decade as interior designers used this style to give the impression of the elegance and refinement of an English country home but ended up looking like people were not taking care of their furnishings.
