Turn the heating a bit down
Dust mites thrive when they’re living in humidity, especially in temperatures around 80.6 °F. Even if anything outside this limit won’t actually kill or eliminate them, it will definitely slow down the breeding.
That’s why you shouldn’t set the temperature in your own bedroom higher than 70 °F. If you decide to adjust to this temperature, you’ll notice multiple benefits: first, it will slow down the growth of any living dust mites, and second, it’s actually seen as a healthy temperature for humans.
Lower the humidity level
By assuring that you have a lower humidity level in your home, you’ll also get rid of dust mites. The perfect level of humidity for all dust mites is around 70%. Anything that’s lower than that will make their breeding a bit harder, as it’s completely out of their comfort zone.
That’s why you should keep a maximum of 50% humidity level in your own bedroom. You can easily measure your bedroom’s humidity levels with an electronic humidity monitor.
Wash bedding on a weekly basis at 40°c
There’s no better environment for dust mites rather than your bed and bedsheets. That’s why we’re strongly advising you to wash your bedding every single week. Hot temperatures are also known to efficiently kill dust mites, so you can use that to your advantage.
Make sure you wash all pillowcases, fitted sheets, bedding, and pijamas at higher temperatures. Also, use the same temperature in the dryer, too, to make sure you killed off any dust mites that might have survived!
Freeze them
Freezing cold temperatures, just like hot ones, are efficient when it comes to killing mites. If you have a couple of delicate fabrics that can’t be washed (whether we’re talking about silk or lace), you could always freeze them! Make sure you place the items in a clean plastic bag and put them in the freezer for 24 hours. This will instantly kill the dust mites!
