Best Humidifier for Singers Buying Guide

Humidifier types

We’ve looked at three main types of humidifiers here with the larger models, personal vapor devices, and more portable humidifiers.

The right one for you will depend on where you want to use your humidifier. If you want it at home or a personal studio then a larger one would be best. If you’re on the go then one of the two other types is going to be more suitable. It’s all about picking the right one for the places you’ll be singing.

Warm or cool

There is a lot of debate between warm or cool humidifiers. Warm humidifiers are good for clearing congestion when inhaled directly. When dispersed into a room, there is minimal difference between them and they are equally effective at humidifying a room.

Warm mist humidifiers advertise themselves as killing germs. While this is true, you’ll only get germs from a cool mist humidifier if the water has been sitting stagnant for a long time.

Coverage

If you want a humidifier for a specific room then ensure that it has the right coverage area for it. A small humidifier in a large room is going to be ineffective. Each humidifier should detail its coverage area in square foot.

Filter

A filter can be a good or bad thing in a humidifier. It can help to take minerals out of the water but it adds an additional ongoing cost. You may prefer to have a filterless model but this would require regular cleaning. This ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of humidifier is best for singers?

There is no real preference for singers but a warm mist humidifier does kill germs and can provide relief from congestion. For simply adding humidity to a room, it doesn’t matter which type you get.

Do humidifiers help singers?

You can’t sing with a dry throat and it will force you to stop singing, cough, and clear your throat. For some, a drink before singing will be enough. For many others, they want to keep their vocal cords hydrated and a humidifier is perfect for that.

Why do singers use humidifiers?

Singers use humidifiers to not only prevent their voices from cracking but also to prevent future damage. It helps you sing continuously without struggling.

Can I use tap water in a humidifier?

You can use tap water in most humidifiers. In places with hard water, this will mean more maintenance as the mineral deposits will build up quite quickly. If you don’t want to regularly clean it then you’ll either need a filter or use distilled water.

Is boiled water the same as distilled water?

No. Distilled water is water captured from pure steam. This steam doesn’t contain any contaminants whereas boiled water will keep its mineral content. There is then no difference between boiled water and tap water in this respect.

Do cool mist humidifiers kill germs?

No, they don’t but tap water contains a trace amount of chemicals that kill harmful germs and bottled water doesn’t contain any either. Unless you leave water sitting in a humidifier for a long time, it doesn’t need to kill germs.
