Although using baking soda can help you get rid of tarnish from silverware, some dealers advise against doing so. According to experts, baking soda and antique silver don’t go well together, as the sodium bicarbonate can be too abrasive and may ruin the metal’s shine and leave scratches on the surface.

They caution against this “cleaning hack”, especially if you don’t know the provenance of the silverware (it’s possible that the pieces aren’t actually sterling silver). Plus, the use of baking soda will also make the silver more susceptible to tarnish.

Instead of DIY cleaning, consider taking your silver to a professional to get polished.
