1. First step: run a hot cycle with vinegar
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on various expensive products that aren’t always very effective at removing dirt, your friend in need is definitely vinegar. White vinegar can be used for both top-loading and front-loading washing machines. Run an empty cycle using hot water (140 degrees Fahrenheit) and two cups of vinegar instead of regular detergent. Put the vinegar in the detergent dispenser and don’t worry about ruining your washing machine! This will both help you clean it and get rid of any bacteria that’s left; Plus, the smell will disappear during the cycle.
After the cycle is complete, don’t forget to wipe the interior of the washing machine with a clean, dry cloth.
